Servo Control System
Project Objective
To design and manufacture a multi axis control system for use in assembling precision components for the automotive industry.
Project Background

The system utilises 2 motors and 3 cylinders for the placement, compression and flatness of parts. Due to the tight bandwidth in component accuracy the selected motors have absolute encoders with 2048 pulses per revolution and a 14-1 gearbox giving a high level of accuracy.

Solution
The control panel contains a PLC, specialist relays for the Light Guard and Emergency Stop circuitry, a servo module with two additional axis modules and the electronic components. An MMI (Man Machine Interface), sounder and pushbuttons are mounted on the side of the control panel. The motors are controlled by dedicated PLC modules via a servo control module and axis modules.

The machine has four modes of operation these are,
Automatic Mode -
Where the operator presses the start button and the machine cycles prompting the operator for input when required.
Dry Run Mode -
Where a pre set number of cycles is entered (from 1 to 999) and pressing the start button will continuously cycle the machine until the requested number of cycles are complete. This mode is included for repeatability testing.
Step Mode -
Where each part of the automatic cycle is stepped through by pressing the start button. This mode is included for maintenance and quality testing.
Manual Mode -
Where each of the machines functions can be activated individually. This mode is included for fault finding.
