Earthing System Investigation and Compliance Reporting

Earthing System Investigation and Compliance Reporting

Background

With no existing documentation available for the site’s earthing systems, our team was engaged by site management following a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) request. The objective was to reverse engineer the current earthing arrangements, confirm compliance with all relevant UK standards, and provide a comprehensive report to satisfy regulatory requirements.

Approach

Our specialist engineers attended site to conduct a thorough investigation. Using UKAS-calibrated test equipment, we systematically mapped and assessed the earthing system, working from first principles to document all key components and connections.

Key Activities

  • Reverse Engineering: With no as-built drawings or records, we traced and identified all earthing conductors, connections, and associated infrastructure directly onsite.
  • Compliance Assessment: We evaluated the system against the requirements of BS 7430 (Code of Practice for Earthing), BS 50222, BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), and HSG230, as required by UK law.
  • Testing and Verification: All resistance values were measured using specialist calibrated equipment to ensure compliance with statutory limits.
  • Conductor Sizing and Type: We confirmed that all earthing conductors were of compliant size and material, as specified in the relevant standards.
  • Installation Methods: The installation methods were checked for best practice, including correct routing, mechanical protection, and labelling.
  • Protective Device Coordination: We reviewed the coordination of protective devices to ensure effective disconnection in the event of a fault.
  • Safety Barriers: The suitability and integrity of safety barriers associated with the earthing system were assessed.
  • Intrinsically Safe Earthing: We verified the presence and adequacy of a dedicated intrinsically safe earthing system for hazardous areas.

Outcome

A detailed report, including clear diagrams and test results, was issued to site management. Our documentation confirmed the suitability and compliance of the earthing system, fully satisfying HSE requirements and providing the site with a robust record for future reference.

Value Delivered

By reverse engineering and documenting the site’s earthing system, we not only ensured legal compliance and safety but also provided the client with peace of mind and a valuable asset for ongoing maintenance and future audits.
