Brightening Up South Wales: City Centre Car Park Lighting Upgrade

As part of ongoing efforts to improve public spaces across South Wales, our team was commissioned to assess and upgrade the lighting in a busy, five-level city centre car park. This facility is a vital resource for local residents, businesses, and visitors, and plays a key role in supporting the vibrancy and safety of our city centre.

Local Expertise, Local Impact

Our survey team, made up of experienced engineers from the South Wales region, carried out a thorough inspection of the car park. Using specialist equipment, we measured light levels at every critical point—parking bays, ramps, stairwells, and traffic lanes—across all five levels. We identified several areas where lighting was below the standards set out in EN 12464-1, the benchmark for safe and effective lighting in public spaces.

Upgrading with the Best for South Wales

In line with the client’s requirements and the challenging conditions often found in coastal and urban South Wales, we selected robust IP65 IK08 LED anti-corrosive fittings. These are designed to withstand damp, salt, and the wear and tear of a busy car park, while providing bright, energy-efficient light. Our installation team, all local to the area, worked in phases to replace defective fittings, ensuring the car park remained open and safe for users at all times.

All works were carried out in strict accordance with our Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS), reflecting our commitment to the highest standards of health and safety for both our team and the public.

Meeting and Exceeding Standards

After installation, we conducted a final round of lux level readings to confirm that every area of the car park met or exceeded the requirements of EN 12464-1. This included:

  • In/Out ramps (day): 300 lux
  • In/Out ramps (night): 75 lux
  • Traffic lanes: 75 lux
  • Parking areas: 75 lux

We also ensured that safety colours and signage are clearly visible, and that lighting is uniform and glare-free, making the car park safer and more welcoming for everyone.
